I’m Shanna! Hello!  I am a  culinary explorer, aka self taught chef – who has always loved our mother earth and been in awe of all the joys she provides us.  I am passionate about food and plants, learning how they fit together and impact my/our bodies. I spend a lot of time thinking and reading about other cultural medicines, historical medicines, and how food relates.  I strongly believe that food is medicine.  I believe without a doubt that foods can and do heal absolutely any aspect of our life. Whether it ignites a passion between two people in the kitchen, fuels creativity in your soul or physically heals the body –  food and the act of cooking can do it.

Food is so much more to me than just sustenance, so much more. It is a powerful tool in building family and communal bonds and strengthening sensory memories. Recipes that used to be passed down through the family are now shared freely with complete strangers half way around the world! The act of recipe sharing is so inspiring to me, a way to be creative while contributing a piece of my life to someone else’s.

I wasn’t always this way, this healthy superfood loving self that I am now. Nope.  I have spent my fair share of time eating crap, fried greasy foods, processed foods etc.  I couldn’t tell you when I found my love of real food, spurring an end to all the fake stuff.  I always had the resources handy; the information, books and papers, friends and family.  I guess it’s just a part of growing up, making individual choices and having to purchase my own basket at the grocery store.  I have been a vegetarian basically all my life, making the jump early in 2013 to be a strict vegan.  Throughout the year I spent being strictly vegan, I made goals to incorporate X amount of raw meals per week, all the while keeping track of how I felt.   I learned while on that journey, that the most important “diet” someone can be on, is no “diet”.  Health is one of the greatest gifts, and we sacrifice it on account of a sugar high or some french fries. Eat what makes you feel good. Eat organic. Eat pure. The surge of energy and joy that comes from eating foods our bodies were designed to eat is not lost on anyone, if they take the time to feel. We don’t need to put a label on our diets, we just need to put some love and thought into it. I am happy to not identify with any specific diet, instead tuning into my personal needs and going for it.

When I was a young girl, grade four or so, I wrote a story about two sprouts (seriously, I was always a little earth-love-baby). One had a zest for life, wanting to burst out and receive the beauty and vibrancy of the sun. The other, was afraid. She was scared to plunge her roots down into the darkness of the soil, she was afraid to produce a flower for fear a child may pluck her. The eager sprout, broke free from the earth and grew – while the fearful sprout was eaten by a hen. I know, what an abrupt ending, but come on, I was in grade four!  Moral of the story which was written at the bottom of the page, stated those who are unwilling to take risks will be eaten up by life.   Such an insightful child.

This blog is my sprout, my true self bursting forward to meet the sun and all the wonder of the world.

About The Blog

Originally I had wanted to start a blog about food allergies and how to cook around them, then I decided due to my lack of skills in the baking department…. I would begin a baking journey and blog about that. Julie & Julia style, you know? Find a super massive really difficult looking book on baking, and bake my way though the whole thing. I however, have much more of a salty taste palate than a sweet tooth, so I tossed that idea. I wanted to write about travel, about learning lessons, about things I get caught up in. My general thoughts, sometimes rants, and often just life will spill out onto the pages in and among the photos.  A public journal, so to speak.

This blog has enabled my passion to ignite in ways I had only ever dreamed, and for that I feel incredibly grateful. Although I generally feel that most days I am so technology challenged, so far behind the times – I am so fortunate to be able to share my love through these pages, to meet and connect with people from all over the world, people who share my dreams my passion my love. People who are hungry for knowledge, who like to explore new tastes and new ingredients. People just like me.
Whether you are just starting out or you are well versed in the kitchen, I urge you to help build this culinary community. Share the love, share recipes, share yourself.

  5. What a lovely blog, I am just discovering growing my greens(I used to get them at the store or restaurants) I saw your post on water, and am inviting you to check out my website. Water is the primordial soup, this device I have found has really changed my life and environment, it actually erases all memory of water and restores her to her natural state. The inventor actually worked as a physicist(and went to school with Emoto) on tesla technologies in rooms where there where no doors or windows for forty years, it is the best invention I have ever seen, nice and clean. (shared you on FB, my friends love your style and passion)

    • Hey there! Why thank you, I very much appreciate your kind words. I am a complete amateur photographer! I use a Canon rebel T3, but have recently been looking at upgraded camera bodies. Super exciting. I took a crash course on photography basics, learning what aperture is, shutter speed, stuff like that. Really really intro, because I wasn’t sure if photography was something I was going to love. Turns out it is! I take my camera(s) everywhere. The course had nothing to do with food, so that part of my journey has been all trial and error.
